What is a Degree Apprenticeship?

Designed in partnership with employers, higher-level and degree apprenticeships combine higher education qualifications, work experience and industry-relevant skills to create graduate-calibre individuals within your organisation. Apprenticeships are an excellent way to raise productivity levels, improve staff retention and develop a flexible, highly skilled workforce.

Our apprenticeships will typically take between one and four years to complete, depending on the subject and the prior experience of the apprentice. Apprentices will spend a minimum of six hours of their contracted time a week in off-the-job activities, including on-campus workshops, independent research, and other development associated with their role.

If you're an employee wanting to develop new skills, or an employer looking to recruit or upskill your staff, an apprenticeship could be your solution.

Funding

Levy-paying employers

If you’re an employer with a pay bill of over £3 million each year, you will pay the apprenticeship levy monthly. This is calculated at 0.5% of your pay bill, which must be spent on apprenticeship training within your own organisation and in others through Levy Transfers. Funds in your account receive a 10% top-up from the Government.

Funds are managed through your Apprenticeship Service account. Funds in the account will expire after two years if unused.

Non-levy-paying employers

Employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy must create an account with the Apprenticeship Service Account to be able to reserve Government funding for an apprenticeship. This reservation ensures that funds will be available to pay for the training from the point the apprenticeship starts.

Apprenticeship Levy Transfers

Levy paying employers can transfer up to 25% of unused annual levy funds to pay for apprenticeship training in other organisations.

If you are interested in sending or receiving a Levy Transfer contact our Centre for Apprenticeships, Work-based Learning and Skills.
