About this course
During your Foundation Year, you will undertake modules to enable you to enhance your academic skills and equip you with the tools you’ll need to study with confidence. You’ll carry out a personal project so you can study an area of interest related to your chosen future subject specialisation.
You’ll be introduced to various types of media, both in theory and practice, and will develop an understanding of the skills and concepts required by the creative industries. You’ll explore historical approaches towards images and the social power they embody and will undertake an individual or group project to produce work that reflects the culture of 'image'.
Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto Year 1 of our English and Film BA Joint (Hons) degree.
Stories touch all our lives. They focus on the things we care about, featuring issues we can explore about important human themes, individual identity or social and political patterns of behaviour.
But to make sure they strike the right note with their audience, stories have to be constructed with care. They need to be planned, crafted, funded, produced and distributed.
You'll learn about the film industry and discover how to analyse, discuss and write about film. You'll study a range of modern literary texts in different genres, analysing how they work and how to compare them to great texts of the past.
We'll also give you plenty of opportunities to bring the two sides of your degree together, exploring topics such as how books have been turned into films, or films into books.
Practical and professional experience is at the heart of your degree. You'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the practical aspects of film-making such as camera, photography and lighting, or you can develop your scriptwriting skills.
In each year of study, you'll have the opportunity to produce your own creative writing, either for a creative project or in response to a text. You'll also complete professional work placements, working with employers from a wide range of creative industries.
