About this course
During your Foundation Year, you will undertake modules to enable you to enhance your academic skills and equip you with the tools you’ll need to study with confidence. You’ll carry out a personal project so you can study an area of interest related to your chosen future subject specialisation.
You’ll be introduced to various types of media, both in theory and practice, and will develop an understanding of the skills and concepts required by the creative industries. You’ll explore historical approaches towards images and the social power they embody and will undertake an individual or group project to produce work that reflects the culture of 'image'.
Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto the first year of our English Language and Linguistics BA (Hons) degree.
On this course you will gain the confidence and skills to analyse the way language is used in society, looking at social interaction, digital media, political and commercial discourses, literature and the creative arts.
You'll explore the history of the English language and how language varies in today's society, as well as covering practical topics such as how children acquire language and methods for teaching English to speakers of other languages.
We'll give you an insight into more specialised areas of linguistic expertise, teaching you how to apply a range of research and analytical methods to language use.
You'll be able to broaden your perspective on language by taking modules in literature or creative writing. We'll give you the chance to take part in creative writing workshops, in which you’ll produce your own creative writing and learn how to give and receive criticism.
We believe that the study of language and linguistics should engage your creativity as well as your research and forensic skills. So we won't just ask you to write essays – we encourage the creation of blogs, podcasts, posters, quizzes and presentations to help you think creatively about communicating your knowledge and ideas. You can also choose to take a creative writing module at each level of your programme, working with our expert tutors who are published poets or novelists.
