LEAF Bronze Award

LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) is the world’s leading green lab certification programme, now used by more than 95 institutions across at least 15 countries. Designed to make research environments more sustainable, LEAF helps laboratories reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency, and support high‑quality research. Given that labs consume 3–10 times more energy than standard offices and generate around 2% of global plastic waste, the framework provides a practical route to reducing environmental impact.

Here at Leeds Trinity, we have successfully implemented a range of sustainability actions, including:

  • Reduction of energy and water usage
  • Improving waste management practices
  • Encouraging sustainable procurement
  • Raising awareness of lab sustainability amongst staff and students

As a result of these actions, the LEAF programme has awarded our labs a Bronze certificate, the first step on making our Biomedical Science laboratories a more sustainable working environment and encouraging student engagement towards being more environmentally conscious.
