How my apprenticeship helped me empower and motivate my team

Two years ago, I recognised that my role in healthcare required more from me. I had a demanding job, and I wanted to be the best leader I could be for my team. I manage a team of 19 remarkable individuals who work hard every day, making sure the Therapy Service machine runs smoothly.

Applying for the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship at Leeds Trinity University was driven by a desire to evolve as a leader. It was not a sudden decision, but rather a growing sense that I needed to challenge myself and take the next step. Once I committed, I was determined to embrace the opportunity fully.

A challenging, but fulfilling experience

I did not come from an academic background, and the prospect of balancing assignments, impending deadlines, work, and family obligations felt so overwhelming that for a while I feared I’d taken on too much. I can remember sitting at my desk one night, staring at an assignment and thinking, "what have I done?". There have been tough periods, but I remained focused on why I started this journey in the first place. It was not just about me; it was for my team, the trust, and the patients we serve. Keeping that in mind helped me stay motivated during the challenging times.

I could not have made it without the incredible support around me. The tutors were always there when I needed guidance, and the Learning Hub at Leeds Trinity provided valuable resources that made a difference. The disability support ensured I had the right accommodations, which helped me stay focused and succeed. I was fortunate to have an invaluable peer group. Whenever one of us faced a challenge, the rest of us were quick to help. The strength of this network played a huge role in my ability to complete the apprenticeship.

The course content and how it made a difference

One module that stood out to me was Teamworking and Development, because it provided space to reflect on my leadership style and consider how to build stronger, more engaged teams. The content was practical, and I could immediately apply what I learned to my day-to-day work. The theories and concepts explored, especially around managing teams and leading change, helped me gain a deeper understanding of the importance of fostering collaboration, trust, and creating an agile work environment. I have already begun to implement some of the ideas, such as improved communication strategies and techniques for motivating my team, which have led to noticeable improvements in the way we operate as a unit.

This personal growth was recognised in 2024, when I was honoured to receive the Pride of Airedale Leader of the Year award. That moment was incredibly meaningful to me. It reminded me that the way I try to lead, through trust, collaboration, and empathy, is making a difference to those around me. It also reinforced the importance of continuing to develop as a leader and to keep creating a positive, supportive environment for my team.

Looking ahead

I’m excited for the future. I want to push the services we provide in the Therapy Service to continuously improve and to ensure that we are always responsive to the needs of our patients and staff. I also have a passion for leadership development. I want to create a culture where the people we serve and the people who work here feel empowered to grow, innovate, and make a positive impact.

If you are considering the Senior Leader Level 7 Apprenticeship, my advice is to do it. It is tough, and it will stretch you, but it is also one of the most fulfilling paths you can take.
