Our third Race Equality Conference focuses on decoloniality, with emphasis on the impact of colonisation in the academy.

As the first and only university in Yorkshire to have achieved the Race Equality Charter (REC) Bronze award, Leeds Trinity University is pleased to invite you to our third annual conference on Race, Equity and Social Justice: Decoloniality of the Academy on Thursday 24 March 2022.

This year’s theme focuses on decoloniality with emphasis on the impact of colonisation on the student/staff experience, wider communities, and diversifying the curriculum. This insightful conference promises to encourage discussion, reflection and challenge racial inequity. Eminent keynote speakers include Heidi Safia Mirza, Professor Emerita of Equality Studies in Education, University College London; Shirley Tate, Professor of Race and Education at the University of Alberta; and Mark Mon-Williams, Professor of Psychology at the University of Leeds. You will also hear from anti-racist and intersectionality leaders including Go Higher West Yorkshire, Dr Arun Verma and Leeds Trinity University students and staff.

What’s happening?

A mixture of keynote talks, workshops and a panel discussion, the timetable for Race, Equity and Social Justice: Decoloniality of the Academy is as follows:

9.00 – 9.10am Welcome

9.10 – 9.30am Professor Charles Egbu and Chelsey Grooby – Leeds Trinity University’s and the Student Union’s role in challenging racism in higher education

9.30 – 10.20am Keynote: Professor Heidi Safia Mirza – Safe Spaces for Courageous Conversations: Decolonising Race, Faith, and Identity in a Post-Covid Academy

10.20 – 10.30am Coffee break

10.30 – 11.05am Keynote: Go Higher West Yorkshire – Collaborative regional approach to decoloniality

11.05am – 12.05pm Keynote: Professor Mark Mon-Williams – Born in Bradford study

12.05 – 12.50pm Lunch

12.50 – 1:50 pm Choice of workshops (attendees randomly allocated)

• Student experience with Dr Tamsin Bowers-Brown and Go Higher West Yorkshire

• Staff experience with Dr Arun Verma

• Decolonisation of the curriculum with Ricardo Barker, Syra Shakir and Professor Fiona Shelton

The conference is aimed at anyone who is interested in race, equity and social justice in higher education, colleges and further education. This conference is an opportunity to gain a greater understanding and awareness of anti-racism and an opportunity to make a difference.
