Television Production, Journalism, Sports Journalism and Broadcast Journalism students from Leeds Trinity University have participated in a specially curated Open Day event at the Premier League Productions studios in London.

The exciting trip marked the first time that Leeds Trinity students have visited the Premier League Productions studios, which produces and distributes all the Premier League’s international content.

The day offered students an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how Premier League Productions operates its live gallery and virtual studio, and a chance to see how it produces and distributes content, including the broadcasting of all 380 Premier League matches.

The trip was organised by Senior Lecturer in Television Production at the University, Richard Greatrex, and Associate Professor (Learning and Teaching) in Journalism, Paul Marsden, who worked with Leeds Trinity alumna (Television Production, 2022) and Production Assistant at Premier League Productions, Barbara Berczi.

Over a day of talks and practical demonstrations, students had the unique opportunity to meet a host of staff from the many different Premier League Productions departments at the IMG Studios in London.

Students were introduced to early career opportunities and heard from Producer Simon Dolman, Assistant Producers Abdus Salam Fadlu-Deen and Ena Bilobrk, and Presenter Olivia Buzaglo. These invaluable sessions provided students with an opportunity to hear from industry experts about the key qualities needed to succeed in live sports broadcasting and gave the students a chance to ask questions and make all-important industry connections as they approach graduation.

Final-year Television Production student at Leeds Trinity University, Max Edge, said: “I had a great time at Premier League Productions, gaining some crucial insight from the best young talent in sports media. It really opened my eyes to the world of high-end sports media.”

Richard Greatrex, Senior Lecturer in Television Production, commented: "Our students had an excellent opportunity to see how the professionals produce live sports content and also reflect on the importance of what they are taught in their subjects at Leeds Trinity University.”

Associate Professor in Journalism, Paul Marsden, said: “It was a fascinating insight into the staggering range of content that IMG and Premier League Productions produce under one roof. The staff, from presenters to directors and producers, were able to give our students a real insight into producing content that goes out across the world 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It was an inspiring day.”

Barbara Berczi, Leeds Trinity alumna and Production Assistant at Premier League Productions, added: “It was great to meet and connect with the students from Leeds Trinity University, and to introduce them what we do at Premier League Productions. The feedback has been really positive, so I’m keen to organise further Open Days and welcome more students who are interested in working in Live Sports.”

Barbara graduated from Leeds Trinity University’s BA (Hons) Television Production degree in 2022. After graduation Barbara went on to work on a high-end TV drama for Netflix, before combining her love of sport and television production by taking up the role of Production Assistant for Premier League Productions.
