Leeds Trinity University alumni Alice Young has won the ‘National Newsreader of the Year’ accolade at the Commercial Radio News Awards 2023.

.

Alice graduated with a Master’s in Journalism from Leeds Trinity University in 2020 and is now working for national media brand Global as a Broadcast Journalist. In this role, Alice is the newsreader for London on Heart Breakfast and can also be heard on Capital, Capital Xtra, Smooth Radio, LBC, Gold, Radio X and Classic FM.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Alice had been nominated for the award which is given to the newsreader who best demonstrates appropriate story selection, clever use of audio and a unique presentation style, as well as being an exceptional communicator.

Alice was named as the winner at the Commercial Radio News Awards ceremony at Sky Studios in Isleworth, London, on Thursday 22 June. Not only did Alice meet the criteria, but it was also noted the ‘added value she provides while covering a range of historic events on location’ was another key reason for her success.

The Leeds Trinity alumna has already covered many major events. Alice has worked on the celebrations of the England women’s football team winning the European Championship, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III amongst others during her time with Global so far.

Alice said: “I am incredibly proud to win National Newsreader of the Year and am on cloud nine after a brilliant night at the Commercial Radio News Awards. It is a huge honour to read the news on Heart, the UK’s biggest commercial radio brand and to have the opportunity to work alongside some of the best in the business. I am grateful for all the support I’ve had from my colleagues at Global and I owe a huge thanks to Leeds Trinity University for giving me the training to be able to do my dream job every day.”

Darren Harper, Lecturer in Journalism at Leeds Trinity University said: “It is no surprise to me and those who know Alice, that she has won this amazing accolade. She was always a superb student with great enthusiasm and a real passion for radio. I am so proud of the broadcaster she has become and I look forward to following her career and cheering her on.”
