Why I chose to attend Leeds Trinity

Before 2010, I hadn’t heard of Leeds Trinity. My first choice was initially elsewhere, but I changed my mind when I visited the campus during a college visit.  A Student Ambassador showed us around who was very friendly and could answer any questions we had.  He put us all at ease and made sure we enjoyed our tour. I really liked the small campus and the tight knit community that so evident.

Everyone on campus knows each other and will always speak to you, no matter who you are. I was a name at Leeds Trinity, whereas at other big universities you become a number. This made me feel at ease and not as nervous as I could have been when starting my studies.

My best student memories

My best student memories are centred around my time in halls - meeting people who I am still friends with today. I loved being able go to a lecture in a very short period of time and not having to get up early.

I also loved the rock and roll bingo nights that the lounge provided! The drinks were well priced and I loved the music too. There were also the brilliant nights that the Students’ Union organised in Leeds City Centre, at places including Barracuda and The Cockpit.

New skills I left university with

I left university with many connections that I made with my fellow students. When I first started at University, I didn’t assume friends at university would be friends for life, but several years later I am still talking to them, meeting up and having fun.

Other skills I learnt were how to showcase, enthuse people and sell something. I had great experience at this from my time as a Student Ambassador, doing campus tours and enthusing others about the rich student experience available at Leeds Trinity.

My career and highlights

After graduating in 2016, I was offered a full-time Nursery Practitioners Job where I worked during my studies.  I left for a new challenge after a couple of years with good experience under my belt. I moved to Cliffe House Day Nursery at Featherbank, where I have been promoted from Senior Nursery Nurse, to Head of Room and then to Assistant Deputy Nursery Manager. The Deputy Manager role involves assisting others in the day-to-day management of running the nursery.

My advice to prospective students

I would say go for it. If you know that you want to work in education but aren’t sure what career you would like to do, Education Studies gives you a good general basis. Education Studies isn’t how to teach but it breaks up education and makes you aware of what it is and the theories that make up learning today.
